Catching up with Ed!

So let me tell you about my friend Ed.

Ed was one of my very first clients when I started working in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sector 3 years ago.

Ed had Diabetes and severe depression and so in my second year I became his Social and Emotional Wellbeing Worker.

Not many people liked Ed and his rude and crude humor, and honestly, Ed didn't like many people because people used and abused his great big heart.

But Ed and I got along right from the start!

When I met Ed, he was slumped over in an armchair in his lounge room hoarded with music CD's, DVD's Memorabilia, old newspapers, musical instruments and just "stuff".

His house wasn't filthy, it was just filled with "stuff" and was what I’d rather call organized chaos.

At the time of meeting Ed he had given up on life, deeply hurt by past relationships/friendahips, his bills had gotten out of control, he wasn't managing financially and just didn't want to live anymore. I remember him saying that nothing made him happy anymore.

Within a month on our program, and me coming to visit each week Ed's health and mental health started to improve.

I attended Ed’s medical appointments with him, we got Ed carers for one on one socialization, a financial counsellor to help with his bills, a really good Psychologist, a gardener and soon enough Ed was thriving.

Every visit from then on Ed was never in his lounge room.

He was either outside in his veggie garden with his little dog Penny, out and about at various music venues listening to his favorite Indigenous local bands/singers or in his back room in which he created into a studio for his shows for the local Bacchus Marsh Radio Station.

Ed had such a happy life, sharing the flavors of his garden whenever I'd visit dragging me outside to see all the wonderful things he had growing in his garden to then pulling me inside to watch an episode of Seinfeld (he could recite the whole thing word for word) just so I’d stay a little longer.

Ed and I hung out a few times outside of work to enjoying a few tribute bands. I really enjoyed seeing him so happy and enjoying his life!

Then none day last year he suffered a severe stroke.

Needless to say, Ed is now paralyzed down the left hand side of his body unable to use his left arm, leg or face.

Ed was my first exposure to a stroke and what it does to a person. It broke my heart to see him this way.

Knowing how independent he loved being and how social he had become I eventually stopped going to see him because of the hurt it caused me.

But I was there on the important days, his birthday I walked in playing and singing “celebrate good times come on” as he did Physio.

Aa time has gone by, Ed has got some speech back and can now say half of my name "Lissa".

Although Ed is no longer my client, and has even moved away from our community I have started to see him again fortnightly.

Ed was a part of the stolen generation, denied knowledge of his biological name, birthplace and birth parents for over 50years through the adoption agency.

As an infant Ed and given to a "white" family whom also adopted other indigenous boys.

Today all of his parents have now passed.

I sat with Ed for many hours when he recieved his adoption papers and learned of himself and tried to understand who he was and where he belonged.

Like so many of us who grow up without culture, there is always something missing and we bonded and shared our missing piece stories together.

His cousin whom he knows and trusts has guardianship of him but hasn't seen him for many months as she lives in another state was happy that I was there last weekend

Speaking to her, they're trying to get him a customized Wheelchair so he can be more mobile to attend more outings etc.

Other than that Ed is still the same Ed, tweeting his days away, watching his beloved North Melbourne Footy Team, sharing with me photos of his dog whom lives with someone new and is still enjoying his Seinfeld episodes.

And last Saturday, I introduced him to Youtube Music on his smart TV!

When I left he was bopping away to Black Sabbath.

I look forward to many more years of friendship for us!

Soup Weather

 Wintery Warm Soup

From my last post you can see that the last thing I bought for myself was a Melbourne Storm Oodie.

Well another thing I have been buying these days has been soups.

My fridge and cupboards are stocked with them more than anything else.

From Pumpkin, to Lentil; Chicken & Veg to Thai Coconut Curry.

I am obsessed.

The hardest part is choosing which one to take to work each day.

So steamy and fresh with a side of toasted Turkish Bread.

Yom!

Mama-Daughter Mondays

Today I am bringing a new segment to my blog.

Mama-Daughter Mondays

At the moment Nevaeh, my 15 year old daughter and I both have Mondays off so I've decided that we spend this day together and document it here on the blog.

We have a few fun things we want to do together coming up but today we went to our closest shopping complex - Woodgrove Shopping Centre - After finding a seat in the food court for lunch, Nevaeh ordered a small HSP pack while I opted for a big fat juicy mixed Kabab with extra onion and lettuce with garlic sauce from Chubbs Kababs. (They are so goooood!)

After we let our bellies settle, we took advantage of the Stirling Silver Sale on at Lovisa.

Nevaeh picked up four new pairs of earrings for school.

During the week, Nevaeh finished her Diamond Art of a Koala, so tonight, while the boys were having their dinner (Nevaeh and I were still so full from lunch) we went to Kmart to get her a new Diamond Art Kit.

While there, because we're girls, and cannot just buy just one thing, we also bought two new books, a gratitude coloring book, some pencils and a pencil sharpener.

After the boys finished their dinner (Grill'd have buy on get one free on their burgers on Monday if your team win on the weekend. As Storm Supporters, Monday nights at Grill'd have become tradition) we did opt for Crepes at the Crepes food van in Melton but unfortunately it wasn't open. So we went to Augustus Geleatery instead which was kind of silly being that tonight's temperature is going to be only 1 degree celsius, the coldest night of winter so far.

But that didn't stop Nevaeh and I from ordering up and ending our Mama-Daughter day on a sugar high!

Until Next Monday, enjoy these pics..

My Girl Nevaeh

Nevaeh wore her Pyjama pants but scored four pairs of earrings for $12 so she’s good!

The last laugh!

David and I went to our first Tuesday night sesh at the Comics Lounge the other night as one of his all time favorite comedians was performing along with 5 other local names.

As we found our seats and settled in the first few acts had some really funny jokes.

I rolled my eyes at a comedian I had heard before as he walked out onto the stage remembering how unfunny he was the last time we saw him perform, but the other night his new jokes were actually funnier.

My cheeks were sore from laughing.

For the final act David got to see his fave comedian Jioeoin and he did not disappoint.

After the show we hung out a little later to try and get a pic with him for David.

As we were waiting, two men approached us, turned to me and said "Excuse me, I love your laugh".

Caught off guard, I said "Thank you?" and then was asked if they could record my laugh.

Apparently they were sitting a few rows back and my laugh was making them laugh.

They explained that it would be used for a radio station segment they were starting on the Horsham Radio Station.

So right there, after the shows has all finished, beside the bar, I laughed. I laughed at my own laugh and laughed that someone was capturing my laugh which made me laugh even more.

They recorded it, thanked me and followed us out of the venue.

I called my kids on the way back to the car telling them I'm going to be famous! Well my laugh at least!

Which made them laugh and then me laugh even more..

What a crazy night.

Easy Air Fried Veggies

Meal prep has just gotten even easier.

Since my son has been focusing on his health, we do meal preps on Sundays or on my Mondays off together.

This week I taught him how to air fry veggies for his chicken and rice bowls.

Veggies we used were broccoli, cauli flower, red and green capsicum and mushrooms.

We tossed them together with some olive oil, salt and pepper and popped them on an Air fryer liner in which you can find here..

We air fried them for around 10 minutes on 200 degrees Celsius.

So easy and so so good for anything and everything!

Another good one to keep for later and try yourself..
