State Park Sunday

The kids and I enjoyed a day out from isolation and went on an adventure into the Lerderderg State Park which is just a 20min drive from where we live. The kids had fun bush walking, smashing open rocks looking for Quartz and Gold and splashing each other using rocks in puddles. The sun was out and the fresh air was so nice. As we were leaving Nevaeh, following the footsteps of her big brother fall in a puddle but she saw the funny side, and we got him back on the way home.. splashing a puddle through his window! Such a great day together burning off some energy.

I FOUND MY FAMLIY!!

My Mum never met her father and my family have been searching for him for years and finally, the day has come that I finally found him! Unfortunately my Mum Margaret Gemai Nawie has passed and will never get to see what her Dad looked like but we do. Me, you and the next generations to come can see the man our Nana fell in love with when she was 19yo on Thursday Island, Queensland married in Townsville and birthed their only child in Mareeba, Queensland before raising her as a single mum in Moe, Victoria.

This was my Mum's Dad - Lobrey Nawie nee Sailor

This is a photo of him (in the middle)

This was his mother - Gemai Sailor

This was his father - James Nawie
(the man behind him was James' elest brother Naton Nawie)

I literally cried seeing these. My Mum grew up with her "white" side of the family in a "white" community along side her blonde hair, blue eyed sister. She was subjected to racism and rejection from her own family and from the racist community including the Cathloc School she attended.

Being proud of who she was came later on in her life and was hard for her. She never knew her family and only knew very little about her rich culture. When she was younger my Nana described my Mum trying to scrub off her black skin. She was so different and didn't understand why she was treated so badly.

I cant help but imagine what Mums life could've been like had she known and understood who she was an found her identity in this family who have welcomed us. She may not have struggled with finding acceptance and love, alcoholism, prescription medications to numb the pain. She may not have been homeless or a drug addict prostituting for her next fix which eventually killed her. Imagine if she learned that she was loved, that her culture was beautiful and that she was a part of the largest family left on Thursday Island!

Fun Facts:

While doing a Google search I gathered this information about my Great Grandfather, James' Parents which I found in this notebook..

Dugong - Banks Island Open married Ñarusa [from Moa (Banks Island)]; their children were James Nawie and Esther
Narusa, bom c.1892 at Adam, a village on Moa, died 1943, daughter of Aikuru and Idabu, married Open or Aken Nawie (c. 1882-1943) in 1912. Aken Nawie was bom on Mabuiag, the son of Nawi from Tanna and his wife, Amakudulu or Kudulu. The family lived at Adam before moving to St Paul’s Mission, Moa. James was bom c.1914 and Esther in 1916.
In the FL version, Open and Ñarusa have only two children, Zemes Nawi (James Nawie) and Eta (really Esther)

Mordialloc 2020

Corona Virus has kept us house bound for the last 5 weeks. Homeschooling the kidshas been a task of its own and speaking to friends and family only via phoneor facetime has its perks if you like social distancing, but I miss catching up for a coffee and a goss with my friends.

Today Nevaeh and I ventured out.

Nevaeh has been begging (and I mean really begging me) to go fishing! Since our last trip here..  where we actually caught a few fish, she has been itching to go again.. But when the government put us all into lock down her and my son Jie have had to stay home and only venture out to exercise. And by exercise, I mean beg me for money to walk to Lucky 7 to buy energy drinks and chewing gum.

Since then though, Nevaeh's wishes finally came true with our government easing restrictions a few days ago we finally got to enjoy some time outdoors. We caught up with Justine, Hiram and Janai on Friday for a picnic at the park where we gave Janai her birthday present. And then saw Jeanette on Saturday but stayed home putting punts on for Pop (my Dad).

Today though, we charged the car battery, packed the car with rods, buckets and the tackle box and drove an hour and a half to Mordialloc where people were catching Pinkies off the pier yesterday. We stopped at the local fish and chip shop to pick up some food for lunch before we paid for parking and ate lunch on the beach near the pier.

The weather was just beautiful and with the sun on our face we enjoyed our afternoon fishing off the pier.

We didn't catch anything but it was nice to be out of the house, in the sunshine with my daughter.

So good for my mental health!

Here are some photos of our day..

We are so happy to be able to go fishing again and back into nature!

Mothers Day 2020

This year's Mothers Day was a little bit different to previous years!

This year, I woke up early, 6am early (since this quarantine period I find myself getting everything I need done and find by 8pm I'm bored of TV so I go to bed) and so I made myself a lovely fresh breakfast which consisted on homemade garlic and cheese bread, roasted pumpkin, rocket, cherry tomatoes (my fave), cucumber and pumpkin seeds. It was so yummy and this year the kids slept in.

Today we got dressed up, did our hair but had no place to be. So be took some photos in the back yard with Max jumping up on us between shots! Which sort of made it more fun. Plus, I am his Mum too remember ;)

Our afternoon was spent with Jie and I watching one of my favorite movies - Elizabeth Town. I didn't think he would watch it all with me but he did and actually enjoyed it and recommended it to a friend afterwards! I messaged a few of my friends and fellow solo super Mums a Happy Mothers Day before Nevaeh and did each others nails.

The kids have just gone for a walk to get their 20 minutes of exercise a day and to get some sweets for later. They're buying drinks, dessert and snacks for later.

Tonight Jie is cooking us dinner which I'm looking forward to and we'll likely watch another favorite movie of mine because there is nothing else to do..

$1600 fines if you leave your house for reasons other than seeking medical attention, shopping, working or exercise.

So snacks and foxtel it is!

8 ways we're surviving isolation

We Victorians are going into our 5th week of lock down due to the Corona Virus (COVID19) which as of right now has infected 3,019,532 people across the world and has killed 208,121 according to this source. Thankfully in Australia the cases are decreasing daily and social distancing in some states are being lifted. But Victoria as far as the News told us tonight will still be isolating until at least the 11th of next month. So here are a few ways we've been keeping busy these last 5 weeks.

1. My Bible App
Just prior to stepping into isolation myself and a few friends began a bible study called defined. You can find it here. This couldn't have come at a better time with the heart break from the kids leaving my care, the lies that were circling around about me and the pressure DHHS was putting me under. I felt so alone and empty, my joy was gone, my world as I knew it had crumbled without me having any power to stop it and my kids so desperately needed me but I was totally out and down for the count. I was completely devastated. This bible app became my go to for hope, for peace and for strength on the days I just lay crying in my bed. I surrounded myself with mighty christian woman and zoomed (Video called) them once a week to share everything God was teaching me through this book. I've never in my life felt so close to God. And through his love and mercy, prayers from friends and love and patience from my kids I began to smile again. Without this app, my friends, my kids and the Holy Spirit guiding me back to a relationship with my heavenly father, I think I'd still be in a world of pain. The app itself has been life changing!

2. Puzzles and Games

  • The Game of Life Pets Edition is a family must have.
  • Stuff Happens is another great game for all ages we've enjoyed an 1000 piece puzzles took us a week to complete.
  • Paddocks (also known as dots and boxes?) which I never lose at!
  • Battleship and Jacks (given to us bya friend)
  • And apparently Fortnite! Would you believe me if I told you I got 4th in victory royal using the strategy of hiding?! Duos is fun to play with the kids except when they call be a newb and refuse to play after a while because they're sick of carrying dead weight. Hahaha. But it's fun just being around them when they play and listening to them play with their friends online.

3. Home Schooling
Nevaeh is absolutely acing this homeschooling business and loves jumping on video calls with her class and teachers. She is also doing really great at her activities and loves being home where she can play with her dog or snuggle her cat on her breaks. Jie.. not so much..

4. Goodreads, Books and Audio Books
Today we received a book in the mailbox and I was excited thinking someone thought of me and put it in there for me to read. But when Jie logged on for English this afternoon he claimed it to be his. Which made me realize how long its been since I polished off a book. I downloaded audio books tonight and poured myself a glass of red wine. I listened to the first three chapters of Girl,Stop Apologizing while doing a sticker mosaic book. I'm enjoying it so far. I'm also reading a paperback book with Nevaeh that we picked up from the op shop last week while essentially shopping for a new reader for her. It's called Blueback  and she has been enjoying reading it both by herself and with me!

5. Red Wine
I have taken a liking to red wine and without a need to be on the roads and saving money on petrol I thought I'd try a few different brands to test my palate. I can tell you I'm no pro, you only have to look as far as my google search history to find "How to pronounce Pinot Noir". This ones the winner so far.. What Red is your favorite?

6. Sketching
Jie has taken up sketching while listening to heavy metal. Sketching tutorials on Youtube and sharpened lead pencils are whats keeping my boy busy when bored. So simple.

7. Foxtel & Netflix
It's no secret that I love a good reality TV show or romantic comedy. These past few weeks I have been watching Sister Wives, The Circle, Below Deck, Wife Swap, Rich House - Poor House, Cults and Extreme Belief, Eat well for less and Crime Investigation docos. I have also watched some old favorites with the kids like Over the Top, Toy Story and even Harry's Practice. Jie makes me watch Everybody loves Raymond..

8. Eating Well
Watching Eat Well for Less has inspired us to eat healthier and has prompted us with a new family challenge. The 5 a Day Challenge. So what we each have to do is eat 5 serves of fruit or veg a day. Nut and lentils also count towards our five a day so the kids and I are exploring new foods and recipes daily. Jie prefers his blended into a smoothie while Nevaeh and I eat more whole foods.

Let us know what you're doing to survive this time in the comments below.

Cooking Squid

Tonight was my first time cooking a squid!

During this isolation period, we do not have the luxury of ordering our favorite meals from the places we love. So I thought I'd use some of this time to learn how to cook the things we love from scratch.

Yesterday I bought a squid from coles for under $5 and looked up a youtube tutorial video on how to prepare and cook it. I cooked it two ways. One with corn flour and the other with a packet of premade salt and pepper calamari recipe base.

They both turned out amazing,

Cant wait now for us to catch a few squid so I cook it again and teach the kids!
